As I watched it unfold I was definitely deeply uncomfortable with the way they introduced Yahima, but as I normally do I put that in the shelf for being excited to see another trans person on the screen. “Wouldn’t it be great if they were a long-term character?” I fantasized as they escaped the vault, subconsciously understanding that they wouldn’t last long narratively. When they were so unceremoniously murdered within a half hour (if that) of their introduction, it narratively made sense, and yet still made my stomach churn. It was like watching a train crash in slow motion. They teed it up with trope after trope, stripped them of their dignity and literal narrative voice, and when they were most vulnerable, repaid it in blood.
